MVS and Legacy Applications Available Online
The sticker price of tuition at four-year public colleges surged at its highest rate in three decades in 2003-04, rising 14 percent over the previous year. The average cost of tuition, room and board at a four-year public college was equal to 70 percent of family income for families earning up to $25,207. Paying for college is becoming increasingly tough for the average American family. Fortunately, the ENF can help.
Do you know an outstanding high school senior who is planning on attending college next year? Do you have a child or grandchild who will be starting college next fall? Both the Most Valuable Student and ENF Legacy Awards scholarship contests kicked off September 1, and applications are now available online. Click here for MVS applications, and click here for Legacy applications.
EEG Applications
It’s scary to think about how you would provide for your children’s education if something should happen to you. If you’re not around to help your child pursue their college dreams, will they be able to manage? Elks have always looked after the needs of their fellow Elks, and the Emergency Educational Grant program was developed with this belief in mind. These grants are available to children of deceased or totally disabled Elks. Applicants must be unmarried and under the age of 23, and the Elk parent must have been an active member at the time of their death or disability. For more information, to obtain an application, or to tell us about a family who could benefit from this program, email us at scholarship@elks.org.

Celebrate ENF Month in Style!
It’s almost here. All year long we wait for the chance to showcase our ENF pride. And in just a couple more weeks, it’ll be time to let loose and celebrate! October is ENF Month, a chance for all of Elkdom to show their support for the Elks National Foundation.
We’ve set the ENF Month fundraising goal at $510,000, 10 percent more than what was raised during October last year. We know it’s ambitious, but we’re certain the generous donors of the Foundation will pull through. After all, they always do.
However, while donating is important, and the most obvious way you can show yoru support for the ENF, it’s not the only way. Think how much more of an impact your generosity would have if you were joined by every other member of your Lodge. The Foundation is based on the idea that the support of many can do great things. So, let others know how important the Foundation is to the Elks, and to the thousands of program recipients who depend on our help each year.
Another way to demonstrate your ENF pride during October is through the programs we support. Local Hoop Shoot contests are starting up, and kids all over the country are diligently practicing their free throws. Help out at your Lodge’s contest and show a kid that he or she matters to the Elks. The Drug Awareness program works hard all year to educate kids about the dangers of drugs. However, the week of October 23-31 gives the Elks an opportunity to call attention to our commitment. Wear a red ribbon during this week and find out how you can help kids live a healthy life.
No matter how you decide to celebrate ENF month, have fun, and thanks so much for your support.

Heroes, Hugs and Handshakes: A Veterans Affair to Remember
You’ve probably heard this story before. Boy meets girl. Boy marries girl. Country goes to war. Boy fights overseas. Boy reunites with girl. But for this story, that’s just the beginning.
After serving during the Korean War, David Seaholm dedicated his life to helping veterans because he knew first hand the importance of feeling appreciated. His wife, Marian, has been with him every step of the way. Today, he’s the Illinois Elks Association’s Veterans Service Chair, and she’s the Lady Elks Veterans Chair.
“Veterans are forgotten by so many people,” David says. “The more the Elks do, the better veterans feel about serving for a purpose.”
Thousands of Elks volunteer their time to improve the lives of veterans in VA medical centers across the country. Whether playing a game of Bingo or bringing gifts to a lonely veteran on their birthday, the Seaholms have discovered that friendship is the greatest expression of gratitude.
The Seaholms’ story is featured in the ENF’s Annual Report, Looking Back. Moving Forward. To read the rest of their story and to view a summary of the Annual Report, go to www.elks.org/enf/4PageReport.pdf.
Personal Note to You…
Your Lodge’s Record
Dear Mr. DuMoulin:
Do you know how your Lodge is doing so far this year? Have they reached the GER’s goal of $3.85 per member? If not, are they working hard to meet the goal? You might not be the one in charge of your Lodge’s fundraising efforts, but you can do your part by donating online at www.elks.org/donate/pulse.cfm. Help your Lodge reach the goal for ENF month, and you’ll have another reason to celebrate!
